Geostone Exposed Aggregate Pool Surround, Horsley Park

What the job was

A Geostone exposed aggregate pool surround at a new home in Horsley Park. The concrete wraps the pool and the spa on all four sides. The pool reads as one continuous surface rather than a path around the water.

What we did

We set out and prepared the area first, getting the base and the levels right around the pool shell and the spa. Falls matter more here than almost anywhere else — the surround has to move water away from the pool and into drainage, not back into the pool, and it still has to look dead flat to the eye. A strip drain along the house side takes the runoff off the concreted surface.

From there we laid a damp proof membrane and the steel. The concrete was placed to the set out levels, we sprayed it with our exposing agent, then exposed the stone in the concrete the following day. Once it had cured we cut the joints, cleaned it down and sealed the surface.

The result

A pale, fine exposed aggregate that sits quietly against the render and finishes of the house and doesn’t fight the view. It’s grippy underfoot where it’s wet, it doesn’t glare in the sun the way a light tile can, and it’s a hard-wearing surface that will handle furniture, foot traffic and pool chemicals with very little upkeep.
